President’s Letter – May 2021

Dear Friends of the Kamuela Philharmonic,

As promised in my last letter to you, the April 18 video recording of small ensembles of our string, woodwind, brass and percussion sections playing works by Haydn, Cirone, O’Gorman, Handel, Johann Strauss, Elgar and Mendelssohn at the Kahilu Theatre will be aired at 2:00 pm HST on Sunday, May 16. The cost of the session was fully funded by a grant from the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts. To experience our streaming performance, go to the homepage of the Philharmonic at www.kamuelaphil.org, and click on the video player link.

Earlier this month we surveyed our season ticket holders and major donors and learned that the vast majority of those responding believed that our Artistic Director’s contract should be renewed. A survey of our musicians last month showed the same results.

Because next month’s Board meeting will be the last of our current fiscal year that ends on June 30, we will hold an election at noon on Monday, June 14, to fill four Board seats that will be open. Three incumbents (me, Sharon Cannon, and Dan Schermer) are running for reelection to two-year terms, and one seat is open by virtue of Susanella Noble’s resignation. If you are interested in running for election, please send us a brief resume for arrival no later than Monday, June 7, indicating your desire to be nominated to:

We continue to believe that our county and state government restrictions on gatherings and travel will be relaxed to enable us to present live performances at the Kahilu Theatre, and have reserved the dates of October 3, 2021, January 30, 2022, and April 10, 2022 (instead of March 27, which was unavailable due to a conflict) for our MasterWorks concerts.

All of our activities, of course, require funding, and the absence of ticket revenue makes our dependence on contributions from donors like you more important than ever before in order to continue our efforts to bring classical symphonic music to the people of, and visitors to, Hawaii County.

Your donations to KPOS are always welcome and can be made by logging in to our website or by sending a check made payable to Kamuela Philharmonic Orchestra Society to the above PO Box address. We are qualified as a charitable organization pursuant to Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, so your donations may be a deductible expense. Mahalo for your consideration and we hope you will donate generously.
