This concert, Shakespeare in Paradise, highlights Hawai‘i’s emerging talent by featuring the winners of the Philharmonic’s 2024/25 Madeline Schatz-Harris Youth Concerto Competition, a perennial highlight of the season.

The program also offers a rich tapestry of music inspired by Shakespeare’s timeless works. Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet, Fantasy Overture delivers a sweeping orchestral portrayal of passion, conflict, and tragedy from the iconic love story. Mendelssohn’s Nocturne from A Midsummer Night’s Dream casts a serene, magical spell, while Bellini’s Overture to The Capulets and the Montagues evokes the drama and romance of Shakespeare’s enduring tale.

Youth Concerto Competition Winners

The Youth Concerto Competition winner performances are shining gems of our concert season. These young virtuosos captivate the audience with their extraordinary talent and poise, delivering stunning performances alongside our Kamuela Philharmonic on the main stage at Kahilu Theatre. Witnessing their budding brilliance and passion is a remarkable experience that inspires and often amazes.

This season’s winners are:

Eliana Chang (12) – Performing Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in C major. Eliana shines with this energetic and complex masterpiece, full of dazzling virtuosity and rhythmic brilliance.

Ben Liu (14) – Bringing lyricism and drama to the stage, Ben performs Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor, a Romantic-era gem brimming with emotional depth.

Sophie Chan (16) & Justin Chan (16) – For the first time ever, we have a talented sibling duo performing. Sophie and Justin will charm with Saint-Saëns’ “Carnival of Animals,” a delightful and whimsical piece filled with playful energy and humor.

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet, Fantasy Overture is a symphonic masterpiece inspired by Shakespeare’s tragic love story. Combining sonata form with programmatic storytelling, it captures the solemnity of Friar Laurence, the violent feud of the Montagues and Capulets, and the sweeping passion of Romeo and Juliet’s love. Composed in 1869 and revised multiple times, the piece features lush orchestration and one of the most iconic love themes in classical music.

Felix Mendelssohn’s Midsummer Night’s Dream: Nocturne is a serene and enchanting piece that beautifully captures the magical essence of Shakespeare’s play. With its gentle melodies, lush harmonies, and dreamlike atmosphere, Mendelssohn creates a captivating soundscape. This exquisite composition promises to transport listeners to a world of delicate beauty and tranquility.

Vincenzo Bellini’s The Capulets and the Montagues Overture is a captivating prelude to his tragic opera. This evocative piece sets the stage with its lush melodies, dramatic tension, and romantic flair. Bellini’s masterful orchestration and expressive themes promise a stirring and unforgettable musical experience, drawing listeners into the timeless tale of love and conflict.

Venue Info

The Kahilu Theatre is located in the green rolling hills of Waimea (aka Kamuela), at 2700 ft elevation in the South Kohala district of Hawai`i Island. The theatre was founded in 1980 by Richard Smart—heir to the Parker Ranch and accomplished Broadway actor—and has a 484-seat concert hall, a Black Box performance venue, as well as two gallery spaces.

Kahilu Theatre presents dynamic performers from all over the world and around the state to Hawai’i Island residents and visitors, and it is home to the Kamuela Philharmonic Orchestra during our concert season. For more information visit the Kahilu Theatre website.
