Concerto Competition

About the Madeline Schatz-Harris Youth Concerto Competition

To honor our founder and Conductor Emeritus, the Kamuela Philharmonic Orchestra named our annual concerto competition the Madeline Schatz-Harris Youth Concerto Competition.

In just a few short years, the Madeline Schatz-Harris Youth Concerto Competition has become a popular and beloved part of the performing arts community in the state of Hawai‘i. Taking place on Hawai‘i Island, but often drawing in students from many neighboring islands, the competition is an essential part of the Kamuela Philharmonic’s mission, as well as the focal point for one of our season concerts at Kahilu Theatre.

Young players up to the age of 18 from the state of Hawai‘i are eligible to compete.

There are three different categories in the competition based on age.

• 12 and under
• 13-15
• 16-18

During the competition, each contestant is asked to perform one movement of a concerto from memory, with piano accompaniment, before a panel of judges.

Winners from each age group are selected to perform their piece during one of the season concerts at Kahilu Theatre with the entire Kamuela Philharmonic. Winners also receive their awards at that performance.
