About the 2024/25 Season

Presenting three fantastic MasterWorks Concerts and the fun-loving POPS! Concert.

Join us for a captivating musical journey as the Kamuela Philharmonic, under the masterful direction of Artistic Director and Conductor, Brian Dollinger, returns for another marvelous season at the Kahilu Theatre. Following last year’s outstanding performances, we are thrilled to present a new season filled with the majestic and timeless beauty of classical music, alongside captivating contemporary pieces. Our Hawai‘i Island audiences are in for a delightful experience of musical excellence and innovation.

The season opens with MasterWorks I: Legacies and Prodigies on October 6, 2024, featuring pieces by Arriaga, Bloch, and Beethoven. MasterWorks II: Shakespeare in Paradise on January 26, 2025, includes works inspired by Shakespeare, with special performances by our Youth Concerto Competition winners—always a season highlight. MasterWorks III: Inspiration of Unity on March 23, 2025, celebrates American music with compositions by Copland, Gershwin, and others, highlighted by guest pianist Jeffrey Biegel. The season concludes with the POPS! on May 4, 2025, showcasing popular Broadway and film music.

MasterWorks I: Legacies and Prodigies

Juan Crisóstomo Arriaga’s Overture in D major, op. 20, showcases the remarkable talent of a composer often dubbed the “Spanish Mozart.” Ernest Bloch’s Concerto Grosso No. 1 offers a blend of neoclassical style and modern harmonies, creating a captivating musical dialogue between soloists and orchestra. Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2 in D major, op. 36 is a work filled with vitality, wit, and the composer’s signature emotional depth, marking a pivotal moment in his early symphonic career. Together, these pieces promise a dynamic and enriching musical experience for concertgoers.

MasterWorks II: Shakespeare in Paradise

Vincenzo Bellini’s The Capulets and the Montagues Overture evokes the drama and romance of Shakespeare’s classic tale. Carl Maria von Weber’s Overture to Oberon enchants listeners with its fairy-tale charm. Richard Strauss’s Macbeth, op. 23 adds a dark, intense interpretation of Shakespeare’s tragic hero. Felix Mendelssohn’s Midsummer Night’s Dream: Nocturne brings a serene, magical atmosphere to the program. Additionally, the concert will feature performances by the Youth Concerto Competition winners, showcasing Hawai‘i’s emerging talent. Expect a rich tapestry of music inspired by Shakespeare’s timeless works.

MasterWorks III: Inspiration of Unity

Aaron Copland’s “Fanfare for the Common Man” is a powerful tribute to the American spirit. Calvin Custer’s “A Salute to the Big Apple” follows, celebrating the vibrant energy of New York City. George Gershwin’s famous “Rhapsody in Blue,” featuring guest pianist Jeffrey Biegel, blends classical music with jazz influences in an iconic American masterpiece. Harry Brubaker’s “A Touch of Jazz” adds more jazz flair, creating a lively atmosphere. The concert concludes with the Hawai‘i premiere of Peter Boyer’s “Rhapsody in Red, White, and Blue,” a patriotic piece that rounds out a dynamic, Americana-inspired program.

The POPS! Concert

From Broadway blockbusters to silver-screen classics, the fun-loving POPS! concert is back to close out the season with a burst of energy. A perennial fan favorite, POPS! features an eclectic mix of selections guaranteed to set the stage ablaze. Join some of Hawai‘i Island’s finest musical artists as they perform alongside the Philharmonic in a concert sure to delight audiences of all ages. About Kahilu Theatre

The Kahilu Theatre is located in the green rolling hills of Waimea (aka Kamuela), at 2700 ft elevation in the South Kohala district of Hawai`i Island. The theatre was founded in 1980 by Richard Smart—heir to the Parker Ranch and accomplished Broadway actor—and has a 484-seat concert hall, a Black Box performance venue, as well as two gallery spaces.

Kahilu Theatre presents dynamic performers from all over the world and around the state to Hawai’i Island residents and visitors, and it is home to the Kamuela Philharmonic Orchestra during our 2019-2020 Concert Season. For more information visit the Kahilu Theatre website.
